I have been studying geological constraints on the stability and occurrence of gas hydrates in Nanakai Trough, Mackenzie Delta, and Hydrate Ridge on the basis of water geochemistry. One of the unsolved problems in my Ph.D thesis is the history of gas hydrate deposition. Iodine, which often enriches in methane-rich fluids, is delivered from buried organic materials, which is probably responsible for the formation of methane. 129I in interstitial water associated with gas hydrates makes dating of the organic materials possible. I'm going to apply the 129I system for the determination of the geological history of gas hydrate deposits in Nankai Trough, Mackenzie Delta, and Japan Sea.

In addition, I'm interested in the methane-rich fluid migration in sediments of continental margins and the study of the 129I system of fluids from volcanic fumaroles and hot springs in Japan to determine the fluid history in volcanic arcs, because the source of methane is also buried organic materials as gas hydrates. My study with 129I system aims at further understanding the migration and accumulation process of methane with fluids as an energy source for shallow geosphere.
