Zunli finished his undergraduate degrees at Nanjing University, China, before he started his graduate work at the University of Rochester in 2003. His research interests are related to the origin of gas hydrates, specifically the application of the iodine isotopic system in this context. He is currently working on sets of pore water and sediment samples from different regions, including Blake Ridge, Cascadia margin, Nankai Trough, and Central American Trench. With 129I/I ratios as a tool for dating and tracing, the efforts are focused to obtain better understanding of the following questions:

  • What is the source for gas hydrates, specifically in areas where the iodine ages are considerably older than those of the sediments hosting the gas hydrates?

  • Geologic constrains on the occurrence of gas hydrates at subduction zones.

  • What is the role of gas hydrate occurrences in the global carbon cycle and in global climate changes?
